Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, athletic shoes and rucksack.

Incident Location

The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.

Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.

Eyewitness Reports

An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described paramedic and police activity after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.

She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances at about 21:00.

"Many co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."

Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.

"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.

"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... and to think something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
