World Health Organization Confronts Major Staff Reduction Following United States Funding Pullout

The international health organization revealed plans to reduce its staff by nearly a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand jobs – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Triggers Substantial Restructuring

The decision comes after the United States, formerly the agency's largest contributor, pulled out funding previously this year.

The US government had been responsible for approximately 18% of the organization's overall budget, causing a substantial budgetary gap.

Expected Staff Reductions

Based on organizational estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

The decrease of 2,371 posts includes job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.

"The past year was among the toughest in our existence, while we have navigated a painful but essential process of prioritization and realignment," commented the agency's director-general.

Financial Gap Remains

The Geneva-based organization now faces a funding gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a quarter of its total budget.

This figure represents an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Not Included Funding

These financial calculations do not include a further $1.1bn in potential funding from ongoing negotiations with multiple contributors.

The spokesperson for the agency stated that the current unsecured portion of the budget is in fact lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller overall budget
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach campaign
  • An increase in member states' required contributions

The restructuring process is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a reshaped operational model.
